I’m running for city council because we need a citizen-focused approach to government. Unlike many of the other candidates, I was born in the heart of our district, and grew up here. I am a product of the public education system of our city, and attended St. Petersburg High school before graduating from Florida State University with a degree in Political Science, with dual minors in Communications and Emergency Management. As a lifelong resident, I recognize the need for a new generation of leadership with fresh thinking and a new perspective.
Our community needs representation on city council with both a passion for public service and real-world, private sector experience. I’ve served my community on the board of the Coquina Key Neighborhood Association and as a Council of Neighborhood Associations (CONA) representative, and received top accolades from St. Pete Preservation for my work in restoring unique, historic buildings, including receiving the Award of Honor for my rehabilitation of a 1909 multifamily building downtown.
The Tampa Bay Times covered my renovation of a "long-vacant fourplex mired in code infractions" across from Melrose Elementary, in the heart of Midtown, where I lived for two years. The building was vacant for over 10 years before I purchased it, with literally no roof whatsoever, and had been stripped of all metals, appliances, air conditioners, and doors. A quote from the story came from my neighbor: " "When I moved here it was empty. It's nice to have all of them fixed up and rented and people right there," said Karin Bell, 36, who rents a two-story house next to Blackmon's apartments." It is just one of over 35 housing units I have renovated in our district. Make no mistake- I am a PRESERVER, not a developer, and work only on improving existing and vacant structures. In other words, I am not just another figure head who talks about progress or action. I believe in our community, have invested in it personally, and will do what it takes to get results for our citizens.
I have the experience, the perspective, and the knowledge to get the job done. I have lived in Coquina Key, Lakewood Terrace, and Midtown, and have made an impact in each neighborhood. I do not represent one small pocket of the district, but rather each and every citizen from EVERY neighborhood. I humbly ask for your vote, and would love to discuss the issues that matter to our community with all. Thank you.
